It’s World Hijab Day and I’m sharing this pict It’s World Hijab Day and I’m sharing this picture of me and my beloved Ummi (mom) who gave me my first lessons on being Muslim and wearing a khimar(hijab). 🧕🏽

She wouldn’t let us out the house without it and required us to use a safety pin and drape it around the front so we couldn’t casually tie it in the back. 🤣

Back then I didn’t understand nor did I appreciate wearing a hijab. I just wanted to be a “cool” kid. I didn’t want to stand out or be teased about my head covering and boy did I get teased and occasionally bullied on the streets of Brooklyn.

As I began to make my own choices I stopped wearing my hijab with the exception of Friday Juma services, the month or Ramadan, and prayer. It wasn’t until I had children of my own that I begin to appreciate what a hijab represents.

Though I still do not wear hijab full time I’m working on not judging myself or any other Muslim woman that chooses to cover or not to cover. Wearing a Hijab should always be a personal choice and never a discerning factor in determining someone’s relationship with God. 🤲🏽

Peace & Blessing to all the Muslim women around the world. 🌎

Little known fact...I can’t swim. 🏊🏽‍♀ Little known fact...I can’t swim. 🏊🏽‍♀️

(Long post, you’ve been warned.)

2020 was my year to learn. I’ve taken multiple lessons, group and private, but failed to become a swimmer. I started this year in group lessons. Needless to say it was cancelled due to COVID-19 before I could learn to float.

Months went by and there wasn’t a pool in the city open for lessons. I gave up the idea of swimming along with a few other New Years resolutions.

Then the unthinkable happened, I buried my sister. There was no way on earth I could conjure the courage to learn to swim in the midst of grief.

Fast forward a month later and I had a glimmer of hope. It was small but mighty enough to lead me to register for lessons at the YMCA despite my lack of motivation.

Well I’ve been in private lessons for a month and I’m now learning the breast stroke. I’ve accomplished floating, still mastering freestyle and treading water, but I’m so much further than I’ve ever been.

It has not been easy and it’s much more difficult than I anticipated. Learning to manage my breath during freestyle is a beast but I’m determined. I pray each time before I start my lessons and this has helped so much. I had a fear of deep water but that fear is no longer there.

I started planning my next solo trip which will include lots of water activity. I’m so excited that I no longer need to worry about drowning while on vacation. 😆

My lesson from this is to never give up on yourself. No matter how hard things get, take advantage of those moments when the sun peaks in through the clouds. So glad I did. ☺️
